Ducifinu is the brand created by the Villari Group to market its Interdonato lemon.
The name comes from the Sicilian: DUCI, that is, SWEET: for the organoleptic properties of its particular juice. FINU, that is, FINE: to represent the elegance of its elliptical shape and its particularly fine peel.
Obtained in the second half of the 1800s from a graft between a citron and an “Ariddaru”, native lemon of the Messina area, the Interdonato Lemon owes its name to Colonel Giovanni Interdonato.
Known the world over, it stands out for the medium-large size, the typically elliptical shape, the thin epicarp, with a peel having a very fine grain and very few wrinkles, abounding in delicately scented essential oils, the colour, which at the beginning of maturation is opaque green and then tends to turn yellow, the yellow pulp, the lack of almost any seeds and above all, the low acidity.
Ducifinu is harvested in the period from mid-September to the end of December: being a rather early variety of lemon, it has also earned the nickname “special”. The harvest takes place exclusively by hand and with the use of scissors in order to avoid the detachment of the stem stub portion. The lemon is then delicately placed in the basket and even the processing in the warehouse is carried out with great care.
The agriculture of the Interdonato lemon is defined as heroic: it is in fact carried out in terraces on the steep hills of the Ionian coast of Messina that extend up to an altitude of 600/700 meters above sea level, so as to be picked also in the natural reserve of Mount Scuderi. For these reasons, this citrus can also be called “mountain lemon”.
The Villari Group has partnered with a local Cooperative in order to recover an ancient cultivar of lemons native to its territory: the Interdonato lemon. Projects have been carried out on the enhancement of local water resources: in fact, thanks to the recovery of natural springs in ancient water mines with the union of modern irrigation techniques, we avoid waste of our planet’s most important resource.
The return of farmers to these slopes helps prevent summer fires and potential hydrogeological instability, but above all, it has revived a thriving local microeconomy.
